DiEM25 offers unique tools that combine deep respect for privacy with the ability to find each other and get organised.
As a DiEM25 member, you will receive the international newsletter and occasionally also national / language-specific ones. If, in addition to that, you also want to hear about activities in your city or region, please go to your account details page, enter your password at the top and then fill in your city and postal code.
If you might like to join a DiEM25 group locally or online, please scroll down on the account details page and put a checkmark next to either "Yes, I want to participate in a local group" or "Yes, I want to participate in a small volunteer group developing thematic materials and policy proposals". This will enable the coordinator of the relevant group (if there is one) to see your name and email you.
If you go to your DiEM25 Member Profile and set your visibility to "DiEM25 members" or even "public", you will be visibile even to non-coordinators - for example fellow local members who are interested in starting a group. Choose some interests, write a few words about yourself, add links to your social media channels - this is your space. If you set your visibility to "public", you can post a link to your profile on social media, allowing non-DiEMers to see that you are a DiEM25 member and read your profile.
Any member who has filled out their own profile can use the Profile Search in order to find fellow members (by name, location, interest or "nearby"). Note that this search only shows members who created profiles and set their visibility to high; the vast majority of members will not show up here. And if you use the contact option here, you will quickly reach a per-day messaging limit designed to stop spam. So it is only good if you're looking for someone specific or for a small number of people. If you want to reach a lot of people, there is a much better option:
Go to the Contact Everyone form and choose the first option in order to send a mass email to everyone within 40 kilometers. This will reach all DiEMers, including people who don't have a profile, people who are invisible, and even newsletter subscribers! It's the perfect tool when you want to invite people to a DiEM25 movie night or demonstration or the like. You can write your email here just as you normally would. It will be placed in a queue for review and sent out within 24-48 hours.
Tip 1: If you are a member of a DSC or other DiEM25 group, you can choose for the mass email to be sent from the group's @diem25.org email address, so that all replies will land there.
Tip 2: If you want the message to be more personal, start with "Dear *|FNAME|*" - the FNAME bit will be replaced by each recipient's name.
What if you want to reach a lot of people but not necessarily the ones near you? We recommend writing a post in the DiEM25 Forum. The Discuss Policy subforums are particularly powerful, because anyone who is indicates interest in a particular policy area is automatically subscribed to notifications about these. E.g. if you create a new topic in the "Refugees & Migration" subforum, several hundred DiEMers who are interested in Refugees & Migration will be notified (notifications pop up on the forum if they are online and are sent by email if they are not).
Please be sure to create a nice profile page for yourself and to set your visibility to as high as you can - this means newbies will be able to see who is coordinating the group and they will be more likely to join.
As the coordinator of a DSC, you are in a position of trust. You can still use the Profile Search and the Contact Everyone tools that are explained above (we recommend you use Contact Everyone once a month to invite new people to an interesting event or action that the DSC is organising), but you also get more tools:
In the Members Area, go to the group that you're a coordinator of. (There is a quick link under the menu point "Connect".) Scroll down and click on the "Review Members" button underneath the list of current members. First, there is a list of current members. If your group is set to "apply to join" (you can edit this setting on the group edit page), people who applied to join your group are listed towards the bottom of the current members list.
Below the section with current members, there is another section that lists potential members: DiEMers who indicated that they want to join a local or thematic group (see section "To be found") and whose location or interests appear to match your group. You can learn more about each member by clicking on their name, which will take you to their member profile, if they have created one, and you can write them individually in order to invite them to join your group. The list is ordered by activity: the people who were most recently active in the Members Area are listed at the top, so that you have a greater chance of getting a reply.
If there are new DiEMers who match your group's location or interests, and who indicated that they want to join a local or thematic group, our system will send you an automatic email. These emails go out every Saturday, listing all who joined during the previous week. This means that you don't always have to watch the Review Members page - though you should still look at it occasionally in order not to miss long-term DiEMers who recently moved to your city or recently indicated that they want to join a group. Of course the system will also send you an automatic email when someone joins or applies to join your group.
The above options do not cover 100% of the DiEM25 members who might be interested in your group, because many people are not interested in joining a local/thematic DSC when they fill out the registration form and some months later, when they are ready to join one, they don't update their account details. So we recommend sending a "you're welcome to join us" newsletter to the broader DiEM25 public twice a year or so. You can achieve the right targeting by going to the Review Members page, scrolling down below the list of potentially interested members, and clicking on the "Send a newsletter to everyone interested" button. You will land on the Contact Everyone page, but with a different option pre-selected - this option is more suitable to finding people who will join, including people who for privacy reasons do not appear in the list. If they are interested, they will write back. Replies will arrive to your group's email address.
